This is No Trick – IHOP Offers Free Scary Face Pancakes This Halloween

If you follow my Snapchat then you already know I’m addicted to IHOP! It’s super kid friendly and the prices aren’t overwhelming which is important to me as a mom. Chance is eating his own “Kid’s Meals” now and Dereon is eating from the adult menu so when a place boasts about “Free” anything I’m interested.

Well good news for other moms, dads, and grandparents like me. This Halloween, IHOP Restaurants will transform into the “International Haunted House of Pancakes” with their frighteningly delicious Scary Face Pancakes! Little ones will get to enjoy this customizable treat for FREE for kids 12 and under from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Monday, October 31st!

Children can let their imaginations run wild by decorating their own Scary Face Pancake at IHOP! Scary Face Pancakes come with a world-famous Buttermilk Pancake topped with whipped cream, a strawberry nose and served with a side of OREO® cookies and candy corn so your kids can let their silliness shine through with their monster creations.

UniverSoul Circus brings Soul to Chicago

Last week me and the kiddos ventured to Washington Park to check out the UniverSoul Circus and boy let me tell you…we had a blast! This was baby Chance’s first time at the circus and I couldn’t be happier with the show. We danced and laughed as we became a part of the  most interactive circus ever.

I remember being a young adult and taking my little sister to the “Soul Circus” it was always a treat for me too (even though I never told her that lol). The music would always be up to date and she knew all the dance moves they were doing. Well fast forward 10 years later and guess what? We are back atthe circus this time and now she’s a college student home for her Fall break. We also have now added my 2 kids and our little sister Dionne. My mom even tagged along this time. LaToya from The Fat Girl of Fashion who happens to be one of my Blogger boos invited us to check out the show with her.

The show kept us ooohing and aahing the whole night. It was so interesting that it kept the attention of my 1 year old (which is a hard thing to do!)

Dereon and Dionne couldn’t stay seated, they danced on every song!

I don’t believe in spoilers so I won’t tell you everything that happened at the UniverSoul Circus, but be prepared to be amazed. Tricks, illusions, and entertainment for days.

The Circus will be in town until October 30, 2016. You can grab your tickets online or at the box office outside of the Big Top located at Washington Park

The kiddos had a blast as we created priceless memories with the help of the Soul Circus! Definitely check them out when they come to your city and if you are in Chicago grab your tickets today because time is winding down.

Free family fun at a Chicago Museum?

If you are anything like me you love going out and having a good time and it’s even better if you have your family with you. What if you could take the whole family to a Chicagoland museum for free? Pretty awesome right?  Well you can. The Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum is now offering free entry on Thursdays (9 a.m. To 5 p.m.) for Illinois residents.

This month is your last chance to get on stage to see if you have what it takes to become a meteorologist with their functioning green screen in Weather to Climate: Our Changing World, which closes Oct. 23. As the weather cools down, it’s always summer in the Judy Istock Butterfly Haven where newly emerged butterflies take their first flight every Thursday at 2 p.m. Starting November 5, get eyeball-to-eyeball with 70 exotic frogs and play on a mini zip line for the opening of Frogs: A Chorus of Colors, an immersive temporary exhibit.

This October, there’s always something special to see on Thursdays!

· Oct. 13: Enter to win a lifetime membership and take advantage of our discounted new membership offers to kick off Chicago Museum Week 2016

· Oct. 20: WeDigBio- Birds (2-5 p.m.) and Plants (6-8 p.m.) Join us for this worldwide event where we help digitize our natural history collections

· Oct. 27: Visit 131 newborn endangered Blanding’s turtles that are living at the Nature Museum temporarily to grow in a predator-free zone

There is no excuse on why you can’t swing a family fun day at the Nature museum.

5 tips on how to avoid Back To School Colds!

Back to school time here in Chicago and all the parents are pretty excited! Summer came and went quickly and now Fall is staring us in the face. Dereon started school 2 weeks ago and it was all bliss until this past Monday when he started sneezing, coughing, and wiping his running nose. Sigh. I started to doctor him up immediately and in the process got myself sick. I started to feel real bad by Wednesday…Chance started to feel sick too. I’m still in the bed now trying to get to 100% before Monday. Chance is a fighter and he’s still getting into everything, but with a running nose and watery eyes. Dereon is feeling better since he has given his cooties to us. The husband has been working so hard he has kind of skipped the plague. Lol. Now that I look back at what I did wrong and I want to help you avoid the chaos a common cold can cause.

  1. Wash your hands and use hand sanitizer! Sounds easy I know, but we don’t wash our hands enough. We have to reinforce this on our kiddos as well because his is the main way we spread germs.
  2. Take your vitamins! I know that vitamins can get costly and sometimes people have different side effects, but I recommend finding a good multivitamin for you and the kiddos to help keep your immune system up.
  3. Get your rest! Sleep is important because it relates to immune system and it just helps your overall health. Getting 8-10 hours of sleep nightly may seem impossible, but if you put you phone down and turn Love and Hip Hop off and go to bed.
  4. Drink Orange Juice! Once I start feeling sick I instantly start downing orange juice. Vitamin C is jammed packed in orange juice which helps your body fight the cooties!
  5. Change your toothbrush! Your toothbrush is constantly collecting your germs every time you brush. When you use the same toothbrush you keep introducing those germs to your body so it’s hard to fight those nasty cold germs. Cop a new toothbrush and thank me later.

I hope these tips help you and your family stay cold free this Back to School season.

Tomorrow isn’t promised

Two days ago we said goodbye to my Father-in-Law. My husband lost his father and my children lost their grandfather. I was left speechless because I honestly thought he would recover from his sickness and things would be like normal or even better. Sadly that didn’t happen.

Death is going to happen, I understand that people are born and that people pass away, but when it hits home it’s a different story. The thought of a loved one no longer being around stings…memories of the past flash in your head and then you realize that you have to go on without this person. Pain.

A funeral is reminder to live. It’s a PSA to not take life for granted and to love those near to you like there is no tomorrow because sadly there might not be.

Hold your kids a little tighter tonight and make sure your family and friends know you love them.

5 things to do with kids indoors this Winter

Chicago is a pretty cold place in the Winter and unfortunately I’m not a cold outdoor type of person. I need heat! For some reason kids are opposite they can be outside and play until their noses are numb. Since Dereon is the only child it’s a lot of times he wants to go outside and play and the next door neighbor’s kids aren’t home so he expects me or daddy to come out and play with him. Now in the Summer time I will leave my central aired house for a little fun in the sun, but I don’t stay out too long. Now in the Winter you will hardly catch me playing anything! Even though I was born in the Winter, I’m not a fan. Lol

So I started themed days with the kiddo and my husband to ensure we have fun on the days we decide to stay in. Now this list isn’t the first time you’ve done these things. We’ve all done them even in the Summer months however now that it’s Winter you need to put a little more effort into the fun:)

1. Movie Night: Ok, how many times have we all done this? A million! But kick it up a notch! Have everyone pick a movie (grab some from RedBox or go through your movie collection or Netflix). Make old fashioned popcorn that pops on the stove (kids love it)! Make sure everyone has a cozy blanket so you guys can relax while enjoying a few movies together. If your couch isn’t big enough or comfortable bulid a pallet on the floor with tons of pillows and comforters. A fun and relaxing night for all.

2. Pj Party: Everyone puts on their favorites Pajamas and get ready for a fun night! Let the kids invite one guest over for the fun. Order pizza, grab some snacks, bring out the boom box! This is the time for silly games, lots of laughing, and dancing. Parents VS. Kids in a dance battle, Truth and Dare Pajamas style, and the famous Pj fashion show where you get to walk the runway in your favorite Pjs and listen to the critics to see if you really have what it takes. Can you say fun? Be prepared to have a ball.

3. Game Night: In the Pyles’ household we play board and video games a lot together. Dereon is a big gamer and so is my husband which kinda drags me into it as well. However when we label a night Game Night my son already knows we are going to be active all night. I love to start the night off with a Wii U Dance competition (Just Dance and Michael Jackson being my favorite). After that Dennis and Dereon normally takes over the Xbox 360 and gets in to a little NBA action while I finish up dinner. Most of the time it’s nachos or tacos for that night. We then pull out the Uno Cards, Monopoly, Clue, Operation, and depending how I feel Twister LOL. The winner of the night normally talks junk until we all fall asleep.

4. Family Cookathon: Cooking with the family is fun! Even though my husband is a Chef, I still throw down in the kitchen. LOL. I encourage my son to help us cook as well and when we have our family Cookathon I make sure to cook something we all like and can all help with. For example spaghetti, garlic bread, and a garden salad. Don’t forget dessert! Maybe a cake or our favorite cookies. We have the music blasting in the kitchen and everyone gets a task to complete. Of course Dereon get the easy stuff since he’s only 7, but he likes the responbility. He cleans the lettuce, helps shread the cheese, places the garlic bread on the cooking tray, in charge of tasting the spaghetti sauce and if we bake a cake the job is 90 percent his. He adds the ingredients, mixes everything with the help of his dad and a mixer, puts the batter in the pan and we place it in the oven while he sets the timer. After the cake cools he is to decorate it. When we make cookies he’s in charge as well. Once everything is done he sets the plates and the music is turned off. We all sit down and pass the food family style while we talk about our day and the cooking process. The experience is filled with bonding and good food! Who knows the kiddo might be a Chef one day!

Bonus 5. If you’ve done all that’s mentioned above and want to push the envelope here are some more ideas I haven’t tried yet, but plan on doing this Winter!

*DIY project: Bulid something together maybe a book shelf or everyone make picture frames for Christmas gift perhaps?

*Scrapbook: Everyone works on a sheet to add to the family scrapbook or everyone can make their own!

* Karaoke night: I’m currently looking for a Karaoke machine since I’m a karaoke addict, but some game systems like the Wii and Xbox has Karaoke games you can buy and play on the system. Find fun songs that you and the kids would enjoy and get down!

It’s up to us how we spend our Winter days. You can chose to be stuck in the house bored out of your minds or you can use some of your creative juices and make a cold night in a night to remember. If you have any other cool ideas let me know. I’m all about trying new things.

Stay warm!

Happy Mother’s Day from A Real Urban Mom

Happy Mother’s Day! It’s a day to celebrate and rejoice the mothers in our lives.

I’m praying for all those that have lost mothers, grandmother, and motherly figures. They are now your guardian angels.

To those that have lost babies and children I’m praying for you. Please know your angels are in heaven smiling down on you.

Today is a bitter sweet day for so many so please spread love and prayers to those important to you.

Happy Resurrection Sunday!

Happy Resurrection Sunday!! As you spend time with your family and friends don’t forget that Jesus died so that we could live.

Let’s stop cheating ourselves. Let’s look outside of the box because the possibilities are endless. He took that beating for us to live our lives abundantly. He wants us to do great things and to touch others lives.

Our kids should know the real meaning of Easter and not just the easter bunny, baskets full of candy, and nice clothes for church. Explain that Jesus died for our sins and that he rose with all power in his hands.

I pray this Sunday is a start of an awesome season in your life and those in your family:) HAPPY EASTER! Happy Resurrection Sunday!
